UK Authorities Give Boot to Counterfeiters
Oddly enough, shoes are apparently big business on the Web. When we encounter spamdexing, (which is frequentlly), some aspect of it inevitably centers on shoes. Apparently lots of folks are hoping to get designer footware at discount store prices. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. In many cases, the shopper receives no goods whatsoever, or they receive a counterfeit (and usually a shoddy one at that).
Malware plays a big hand in spamdexing - it's often used on compromised sites to inflate link reputation of the counterfeit e-stores. Malware also plays a big role in counterfeiting; it's often the method used to steal the intellectual property in the first place.
On December 3, UK authorities announced a shutdown of over 1200 websites hosted in the UK which were involved in fraudulent and counterfeit goods. They've also reportedly put a freeze on the domain names, which should make it a bit harder for the criminals to quickly move shop. Complete details at BBC News.
